20 New Acts Announced
What’s that sound? It’s the tick-tick-ticking of the LAND OF KINGS countdown, that’s what. With just under four weeks until we throw open the proverbial doors to this year’s festival, we can announce twenty new acts joining the roster.
Transforming one of the best-kept secrets on the Dalston strip – a cavernous banquet hall tucked away behind unassuming doors – THE CASTLE STAGE welcomes 4 new acts: PORTICO bring their new vocally-charged electronica complete with new Ninja Tune signing and album; NZCA LINES serenades with his effusively polished blend of R&B rhythms and analogue synths; Austrian duo HVOB present their dark, percussive take on synth-pop; and WYLES & SIMPSON prove just why their blend of electro-soul has got tongues wagging.
Over at the STREAT FEAST OF KINGS STAGE in Dalston Yard, beguiling cosmic synth-pop from AUCLAIR; exotic soundscapes from ORLANDO; low-fi punk from TRASH KIT, and heady psych-rock from Bella Union signed four-piece LANDSHAPES.
FLYTE join Island Records’ sky-high showcase, ISLAND LIFE, atop Dalston Roof Park for an acoustic set, alongside dub/reggae pioneer and BBC 6Music sage DON LETTS; and forward-leaning collective HUNTLEYS & PALMERS curate a line-up of bright futures at The Alibi featuring 24 year-old production savant signed to Erol Alkan’s Phantasy imprint GHOST CULTURE, and rising star of dark disco LENA WILLIKENS.
The Pool Agency throw a subterranean disco with Thump, featuring the UK festival debut from Aussie bizarre-house duo ZANZIBAR CHANEL, Berlin disco king and sartorial savant CAPABLANCA, plus DJ sets from both co-hosts.
Noisey lets rip with GRIME KARAOKE at Birthdays with its first festival outing, inviting wannabe wordyrappers to step up. With November’s launch edition drawing out the likes of Stormzy, JME, Ghetts, Izzie Gibbs, Shorty, Blue Daisy and other protaganists of the grime glitterati, who knows who’ll turn up this time… But before pros and punters can realize their dreams as latter-day grime superstars, a showcase sees performances from prolific US rap producer LEX LUGER (whose hit list reads like a who’s who of hip hop’s heavyweights); mask-clad producer BROLIN; dark nostalgic pop siren CHLOE BLACK, and DIY singer-songwriter ESTHER JOY LANE.
Balancing the heady weight of first class music, the arts programme welcomes all manner of curious behaviour and extraordinary eccentricities. Be it Death Drawing with ART MACABRE, outdoor cinema and Film Soundtrack Karaoke with LOST PICTURE SHOW, a run of late night shorts at the Rio courtesy of LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL, lyrical folk from THE NEST COLLECTIVE, a multi-sensory drinking den in a WWII bunker, or discussion and debates with DALSTON DARLINGS and LET’S BE BRIEF for Royal Thoughts: A Salon of Interviews & Ideas, there’s a whole host of activities to tempt you through the looking glass.
