Dalston’s Grade II listed Rio Cinema has been providing movies to the area’s inhabitants since its days as the Kingsland Empire back in 1915. With an art deco façade that extends to its interior design as well, entering the Rio provides a taste of yesteryear both aesthetically and cinematically. Despite the various cinema’s Dalston used to be home to, the Rio is now a rather solitary pillar of the filmic community. True to the community, their program takes in areas of local interest usually ignored by the mainstream, such as the annual Turkish and Kurdish film festivals.
